Sunday, June 02, 2013: As per the available statistics, thousands of children below 15 years of age have been involved in smoking/tobacco usage, which is a matter of concern for the entire community. With an aim to discourage tobacco usage and bring down the number of young smokers in the country, Sri Ramakrishna Institute of Oncology and Research (SRIOR) has launched an Android-based application called Smoking Cessation. The app was launched by D. Lakshminarayanaswamy, Trustee, SNR and Sons Trust. Android platform was chosen for the app for the simple reason that most of the vulnerable youth in India (15 to 19 years of age) - are often spotted holding a cigarette in one hand and a smart phone in the other.
It is worth mentioning here that there are several similar apps on Android's Google Play Store such as QuitNow!, Quit Smoking or Time to Quit Smoke, which all are promoting the same cause. Smoking Cessation has been created to address different aspects concerning the effect of tobacco use/smoking, such as consequences, tips to quit smoking, details related to various de-addiction centres all over the country. You can also find smoking cessation centres in Google Maps along with latest updates on tobacco cessation.
The app also features an 'Addiction quiz' that allows the users to figure out their and level of dependency on nicotine. It also has an interactive application part, which is linked with social media sites to offer weekly updates.
The app is available for free download from the Google Play Store, and soon will also be available on other mobile operating system platforms. |
